About This Book

Based on a true story widely read in another form, The Call of the Ocean goes in and out of the mind a schizophrenic and follows the book of Revelation verbatim. A good-natured person, Johnny spends his free time talking to the homeless, giving to the needy and working at his father's mission in Venice Beach. But in church and in everyday life he has a tendency of dozing off and daydreaming, a hobby his casting director girlfriend, Leslie, believes will serve him greatly as he writes the screenplays Hollywood needs. Paul, Johnny's father discourages this, citing that his son should stay away from Hollywood and its evil ways. Being pulled at both ends by his liberal girlfriend and conservative father, Johnny's dreams begin to borderline insanity, and he is treated as a schizophrenia patient as he begins to act upon them. But it is a shock to him, and to everyone else—on earth and elsewhere—how foretelling they are. As Johnny discovers he is dreaming about Armageddon, he must choose whether or not to display himself as the crazed loon claiming the end is coming soon, or keep his mouth shut. He wonders if he will end up like the other madmen walking the boardwalk of Venice Beach with wild looks in their eyes babbling to themselves and calling out for others to repent before it's too late—because they may be right.
