About This Book

Sugarman is a story of hellfire and damnation preaching as it existed over most of the South at least till the middle of the 20th century. In many of the back parts it still exists. The protagonist lusts after a half-sister from whom he has been separated since birth and finds it impossible to protest this great evil to the preacher, or Sugarman, who happens to be his uncle. In the end he is dragged still resistant to the altar and flees the church to hide out in the family's hay-barn with a pitchfork at the ready, wondering if he will actually gore the preacher's innards even as the latter stands shouting at him from the barn-lot. The Sugarman climbs toward the hayloft, is threatened with the pitchfork and falls to the barn floor of his own volition. The protagonist's half-sister shares his feelings though refusing to succumb to his advances.
