About This Book

SONNY is about a young cuckolded husband in a 1970's setting, which uses the Southwestern United States as a backdrop. Unaware that his wife had died from his rough handling of her, after a taunting, adulterous affair, Sonny takes to the road, hooking up with a band of picaresque misfits -- and finds redemption in his care of them. Sonny attempts to address the problem of alienation as he sorts out his feelings toward his fellow men. A dwarf, a black paraplegic Viet Nam war vet, and an elephant -- form key elements in his coming to terms with himself. Starting in New Mexi¬co, the one-van carnival with which he becomes associated, wends its way along the back highways of the southwest, eluding the specter of police and justice -- ending in the streets of Los Angeles and its enormous inner-city Griffith Park engulfed in a blazing brush fire.
