About This Book

At first, Esther and Gerhard Claassen, as well as sons Chris and Hermann (in the Hitler Youth) are hopeful about the "New Germany." Because Hitler's cause seems noble, they and other German Mennonites have allowed their traditional commitment to peace to weaken.

But soon fear clutches Esther's heart. Adolph Hitler's recent decrees and rantings threaten their entire family. As the evil mounts, Doctor Rosenbaum asks the Claassens to shelter his Jewish daughter Ruth in their farm community. To their horror, a betrayal within the household spells doom for Ruth.

And can they piece together enough of their tattered faith to find guidance through the Nazi Night?
