About This Book

Darcey,
I write this because I've just come from the doctor. He told me it would be very soon and these are things I must say to you. I know the last five months have been hard on you, knowing that I was going to die. Those months in the hospital before you came were agony for me. Although I had my family and many friends, I felt alone. I knew the moment I saw you that you were the one, I wanted to share the rest of my life with. Not just the pain and my fears and needs, but the joys of love, laughter and music as well.
I want you to know that I thanked God every night and day for you. I only have one regret, that I didn't have a year with you. If I had, I would have asked you to marry me. But knowing that time wasn't on our side, it wouldn't have been fair to you.
I know when you read this I will have already been buried. You'll cry, this I know, but don't cry too long. You're a woman and some day a man will come along who can offer you many years of happiness. Be sure first. When that day comes you'll have to put me aside in your heart in a little place all my own. Do this without hesitation because that's where I'll belong.
You are the woman who gave me a lifetime in five months. I envy the man you'll marry. I hope he's smart enough to know what he holds, because I held it, even if it was just for a little while, and I knew.
With all the love this heart can hold.
