About This Book
Shelley Daniels knew that she should leave Pharaoh Farms, now so drastically different from her happy childhood memories of it. She had returned at the urgent request of Marion Pharaoh, mistress of the Colonial-style mansion and the prosperous apple orchards on the shores of one of the Great Lakes.
But Marion had died suddenly before Shelley's arrival, and Shelley would never learn the secret about Nathan that Marion had wanted to impart to her. Proud, stern Nathan, Marion's elder son, was no acting master of Pharaoh Farms, and Shelley found herself half attracted, half-frightened by his brooding magnetism.
It was at Nathan's request that she decided to stay at Pharaoh Farms to care for Hallie, his four-year-old motherless daughter, despite the protests and warnings of Caryl Gregg, her former suitor. Shelley, however, felt compelled to look after the love-starved child and to play the mediator in the angry rift that had sprung up between Nathan and Kit, his once-adored younger sister.
What had happened during Shelley's four year absence to transform the idyllic farm into a family battleground fraught with suspicions, hatreds, and the threat of evil? Whatever is was, Shelley sensed that it involved Hallie. And when the child narrowly escaped a smothering attempt, Shelley knew that more than peacemaking was required to protect Hallie from her hate-ridden family. Shelley desperately needed to discover Marion's unrevealed secret.
