Minnick has forced Leena Whitelaw on a sabbatical to Gates Pond to recuperate from her latest case. As she tries to adjust to the cold weather and her resentment at being taken off active assignments, Leena decides to stir up a few jobs of her own. Marcus Trevor Valentine once worked for Minnick but has come home to Gates Pond to serve as chief of police. When Leena is gunned down in front of Marcus, he discovers his life and his vacation interrupted by the strange woman he’s falling for and more cases than he cares to handle. They are both upset with Minnick for controlling their lives and refuse to speak with him as they try to solve the brutal murder of a woman in Leena’s backyard and their feelings for each other using only the special powers they possess.
