About This Book
It was at her doctor friend's suggestion that Paula Stevenson decided to give up her duties at City Hospital for an assignment that promised to offer more than just routine nursing. Dr. Jerry had described a lovely pastoral setting in which Towpath Lodge was located, on the banks of the Erie Barge Canal. And Paula's job was to look after six-year-old Davey Hefron, confined to a wheelchair and crutches because of a broken leg.
After arriving at the lodge, Paula realized that she might have more than one medical problem on her hands. Davey's grandmother, Laura Hefron, suffered from frequent angina attacks and in a peculiar way seemed to belong more to an ethereal world than to a physical one. Also puzzling to Paula was Davey's father, Greg, whose interest in Davey was at best casual and who looked almost too young to have a son Davey's age. And worst of all, Davey had no mother to give him the love and attention he so desperately needed.
But there was someone who took more than a passing interest in Davey--and in Paula. Matthew Hefron, Greg's older brother, was dark and brooding, and seemed ideally suited to the somewhat unnerving atmosphere of Towpath Lodge. Matthew's plans to build a nuclear power plant were causing angry controversy among the townspeople--and they also served to disturb Paula's vision of a bright new life in a place she did not want to leave.
