In this expanded version of an earlier work under the same title, Vinny Denucci is the son of Sonny Denucci, the notoriously ruthless " Boss of Bosses" of the five Mafia families of New York. Vinny is a bright, good natured young man, who is sheltered from his father's business by his strong willed mother, Felicia, who envisions a better life for her son than the one chosen by Sonny. Felicia's and Vinny's dreams however conflict with the intentions of Sonny, who wants his only son to be his successor as head of the crime family. Through a series of stunning events, Sonny ultimately wins his struggle with Felcia for Vinny's soul, and drags Vinny into the life he and his mother so vehemently opposed. This story, through its many twists and turns, traces the life of Vinny from a normal teen through his initiation into the family, where he becomes a " mobster" and begins to detest the man he has become and the father who forced him to go astray. As Vinny struggles for his identity, he learns some very unsettling truths about his father from an unlikely source, which compel him to turn his life around and exact a measure of revenge against Sonny and all that he represents. Vinny conceives a plan to make amends for his sins and escape from the most ruthless man he has ever known.
