      An animal rights activist for over twenty years, Kalechofsky's anti-vivisection stance is brilliantly articulated in twelve grim, haunting, funny, nightmarish stories. The pain clinic Job enters is modernity, its artificial atmosphere and omnipresent concern with disease and health. This modern Job suffers from an undiagnosable back problem and runs a website, which receives thousands of hits a week. The story, as Cynthia Ozick remarked, is Kafkaesque, a witty "nightmare vision." Several stories are based on true events, such "Four Women From Ravensbruck." Others might as well be true, such as "Mary, Mary," a spoof on the Nobel Sperm Bank.
