About This Book

Excerpt from How Leslie Loved
Leslie was lying alone in the dark. She had given the theatre tickets to Mrs. Snellgrove and told her to get some one - any one - and go. She was far too wretched to dream of going to the theatre herself. She had such a heartache as she had never known before. Her heart was a particularly active heart and much given to violent emotions of all descriptions, but a pain like the present one was new to it. It hurt her physically. It was a real heartache - her first real, absolute, impossible-to-ever-get-over, heartache. It was so terrible that it had made the idea of going out, and perhaps forgetting it, completely revolting.
