Home Front

Wartime in rural America. Families torn asunder, lives disrupted, fundamental human values tested. Such is the atmosphere in the 1940s, when this moving story takes place. Young men, and even a few women, become the nation's warriors. Some never return. And here on the Home Front, farm fol, clinging fiercely to their independence, are suddenly confronted with mandatory rationing -- gas, food, even shoes. Conversely, some of those down on their luck are able to get a new start by working in defense plants or doing other war-related jobs. Memorble characters move the panoramic plot forward as we are taken from the farmlands of central Illinois to the arid and almost hostile desert near Phoenix. As the Martin family and their neighbors struggle, we see their real natures evolve. And through it all, Stray Dog watches as families endure -- one way or another.
