Gloria's Ghost

Everyone told Gloria Johnston, aged fifteen, that it was perfectly ridiculous to think that ghosts could exist. Mr. Cruikshank said it, and who could argue with a high school principal? Captain Dernsdorff said it, and who could argue with a chief of police? Dr. and Mrs. Johnston said it, and who could win an argument with her own parents? Yet Gloria had not only seen a ghost in the deserted old mansion, Hemphill House, but had watched it beckon to her.

Gloria had other problems—a decision on an after-school job in the field of audio-visual presentation, which she hoped one day to make her career, the problem of a quarrel with Ricky Maynard, the boy next door who had always carried her books to school.

And as she learned that there are explanations for ghosts and equally unexpected solutions to other problems, she found a somewhat painful new maturity.
