About This Book

Folks Called Her Sadie is a fictional tale about a young prostitute in the 1800s. Records actually listed some residents as prostitutes, but I have no way of knowing if the ladies claimed that occupation or if the census taker had decided that is what they were and recorded it as true. While discussing my book with a cousin, I mentioned that I had not given my leading character a name and she suggested I call her Sadie after her great-grandmother, who had been a prostitute in her youth. The name fit and slowly Sadie began to develop into a person whom I could recognize. Sadie is not a smutty little story about sex, but it is the story about a fourteen-year-old girl doing what she could to survive in a world run by men. When the opportunity presented itself, she moved into a more wholesome way of life.
