The Caldwells cope with the final days of World War II in Summers' latest. Imogen continues to be superstitious about marrying her fiance before the war ends; then, when she finally decides to go through with it, her plans go awry. Daisy continues to nurse the wounded, all the while wondering if nursing is her true calling. When her Canadian boyfriend, a pilot, is injured, Daisy hopes that he'll stay grounded but knows that flying is in his blood; sure enough, as soon as he is well enough, he is airborne again--with tragic results. She maintains her spunky attitude while appreciating just how lucky she is to be with the Caldwells and how much they've come to mean to her.
