When a hurricane destroys her home, thirteen-year-old Kara is sent up north to live with her grandmother, Lily. There, Kara is horrified to discover that the townspeople believe Lily is a witch and responsible for the disappearance of a child twenty years ago.
As Kara explores this mystery, she discovers a park her grandmother helped create, a park filled with eerie stone dragons. Kara also discovers pieces of something called "the dragon bone flute," a device capable of opening doorways to other worlds. Armed with only a piece of the flute, Kara succeeds in opening a doorway between her world and the world of dragons.
And then, everything goes wrong. First one dragon, then another claws its way into Kara's small town. Now, in order to close the portal, Kara and her friend, Dylan, must race to find other pieces of the flute before the dragon queen, Bone, takes over the world.
