And when Tom Oglivie, the young doctor, suggested that she come and stay at the Dingwall's farm, Mary Dingwall agreed -- but with misgiving. She and her brother Hew were struggling to work off the debt which encumbered the property, and Mary was certain that her own unromantic way of life would stand little chance by comparison with the stylish airs of Blythe Carmichael.
