About This Book

At age fifteen, Michael Ward proudly brings his longtime friend and now boyfriend Simon Brule home to tell his parents about their relationship. He hadn't expected the reaction to be as harsh as it is. Michael's father is a recovering alcoholic and the church they joined to support his sobriety tends to be openly homophobic. Michael is told to leave the family home. One of Michael's teachers and her husband take the young homeless man under their wing. He's given a place to live and support with his hurt over his parents' attitude. Mike finds a job at a gay bar, even though he isn't at the legal age for such a place. He and Simon become closer in their relationship. A chain of events leads to Simon's murder, an eventual reconciliation with Michael's parents and a budding romance with co-worker and protector, Barry Decker. Barry's situation is similar to Michael's, having been turfed from the family home because of his sexuality. Michael's mother is determined to broker a new beginning between Barry and his parents. Can Michael's mother perform a miracle? Will Barry and Michael work safely with the police to shut down a gang responsible for Simon's murder? Warning: Contains raunchy sex among young peers. Jagermeister shots, a few two-handkerchief moments and coming of age are all elements of Can't Change Nature.
