It was not a chance anyone would turn down lightly—Greece for three weeks in April with all expenses paid and a generous salary thrown in. For Lydia Barnett, who taught Greek history to the Upper Sixth, this holiday job as companion to Mrs. Erskine, a wealthy American, seemed almost too good to be true.

But the promise of three carefree weeks is shattered almost as soon as they arrive in Nauplia. Lydia's knowledge of Greek history and her interest in the ruins soon involve her in calculations that are far from archaeological, and there are time when even Marius, the Oxford don, seems to suspect her motives.
