About This Book

Maggie Garret is a woman who faces a hard life on a weed-grown Mississippi farm. She struggles to keep food on the table in spite of Ezra, her cruel, drunken husband. Her teen-aged daughter, Bennie, believes that she is in love with her foster brother Pete, who leaves for Louisiana to find work. Pete is initiated into the nightlife by a co-worker, where he meets Marie and has an affair that ends in pregnancy and marriage. Ashamed to tell the family about Marie and the baby, Pete goes home alone to deal with his desire for Bennie. But fate deals him a blow in the name of Mickey Gilmore, a man whom Bennie has learned to love. As Bennie turns to Mickey, Pete realizes his love for Marie. Bound by marriage to one and desire for another, Pete and Bennie come full circle in their quest for true love.
