When Eve Manning inherits £5,000, she decides to travel to Australia for a Christmas holiday, taking her pen pal Bill up on his invitation to come and stay in the Outback.

However, Eve's plans don't quite go as she expected. Bill McMahon has just broken his ankle and is in hospital when she arrives. To make matters worse, he neglected to mention his Christmas visitor to his daughter Chloe, who is frosty towards her.

Eve finds Bill surly and distant at times but at others he is the kind, attentive friend she came to know online. Could she have something more than friendship with Bill? Eve finds herself torn by conflicting feelings, and when she seizes an opportunity to spend a few weeks away from Bill's farm and closer to a new acquaintance – the arrogant psychologist, Alex Cameron – life becomes very complicated all of a sudden.
