      In World War ll, QA nurse Laura Terrington  is caught up in the 1940 evacuation from Dunkirk. On her ambulance train, she meets wounded Christopher Leybourne, and they have a whirlwind romance when he later seeks her out in London. They marry just before she sets off on her next mission, but when she returns a year later, there is no news of him. She decides to seek out his family in North Yorkshire, only to clash with his brother Nicholas.
