James Lockhart is a traveling salesman who works for a company that prints and sells banknotes. When four banks are robbed and two bank managers are killed shortly after Lockhart makes his deliveries, the salesman is the obvious target of suspicion.

Also arrested is an actress named Marian Taylor, accused of being Lockhart's accomplice. Lockhart knows he didn't do it; Marian knows she didn't do it; but neither believes the other. Luckily for Lockhart, Marian is a contortionist and disguise artist, and she helps them escape from the custody of U.S. Marshal Rance Henson, better known as Marshal Doom.

But the trail gets more dangerous with each mile they travel: Marshal Doom is hot on their trail and thanks to the newspapers, everybody knows their latest move -- including the real killer.
