Robert Lescaut is a colonel in Napoleon's army. His estranged wife, Lucie, has been murdered and he is determined to find her killer to somehow ease his guilt for having not loved her as he knew he should. His search takes him to Scotland where he learns that Lucie was the illegitimate child of Thomas Blair and Lucillia Lauder, whose families have feuded for longer than anyone can recall and for reasons that none cares to remember.
