Murder in a Quiet Place — Tony Caxton

The small English village of Long Slaughter is not the kind of place where you would expect to hear about a murder, but recently things have changed. When Mark Stanhope finds his fiancee brutally killed in front of her fireplace, Police Inspector Denis Bowker senses that he has more than just a domestic jealousy case to crack. Newcomer Detective Sergeant Jack Knight has heard stories of how the intimidating Bowker cracks his cases by glaring at people until they confess, but this case proves to be much tougher. As the pair delves deeper into the investigation, they learn all about the secret life of beautiful Lynn Hurst and her many lovers.
The question is, which one of her lovers, if any, murdered Lynn? Was it Mark Stanhope, the bankrupt architect? Dr. Harvey Hurst, Lynn's ex-husband who still has a passion for her? Roy Stibson, the villager from the other side of the tracks? Empson Rowley, Lynn's eccentric neighbor who draws horrific science fiction cartoons? The list keeps getting longer and longer, but none of the suspects can be easily eliminated.
Will the detectives be able to wring the truth out of their unreliable suspects before another murder occurs? Knight finds that Bowker, who may not be as gruff as he seems, has more than a few experienced tricks up his sleeves that they will need to solve this complicated mystery of jealousy, extortion, and greed.
