Jack Ryan is doing his thing with the CIA.

In a complex plot, action begins in Afghanistan where the United States is helping Afghan fighters resist the Russian invasion, in part by providing missiles Afghans will use to destroy Russian helecopters.

The United States and Russia are competing to develop a missile system that could be used to shoot down enemy satelites. A Russian war hero, Colonel Mikail Filitov, doesn\\\'t believe in the direction of Russian officials and has been giving the United States information about Russian Military for years. He has information about the Star Wars system.

Russian authorities have discovered his treason and are about to arrest him. Jack Ryan finds out and goes to Russia to help him escape.

Well done story with many characters who will be seen in future Clancy novels.
