Jane Halliford was so busy with her nieces and nephews that there was little room in her life for the two men who loved her: Cosway, her brother's brother-in-law, and Roger, the family doctor.
Then Mme. Susostris was murdered -- and the only witness was Culbertson, Jane's 9-year-old niece with a talent of eavesdropping. But Culbertson had fallen (or was she pushed?) down the stairs that night, and was left with temporary amnesia. And somewhere a murderer wondered when she would begin to remember…
Aware that both she and the child were in danger, Jane soon realized that either Cosway or Roger must be the murderer.
