Melanie's marriage to Timothy Ransome had ended before it had begun, when she found him making love to another girl only hours after the wedding. She tried to forget the heartbreak by devoting herself to her career as a ballet dancer, and the unhappy episode was ended anyway when Timothy was killed not long afterwards.

The cure seemed complete when Melanie met Timothy's cousin Gregory and before long found herself in love again - but this time with a deeper, more sincere feeling than, she knew, she had ever had for Timothy.
