It all begins with motorcycles: four vintage Harley-Davidsons, carefully hidden away in the barn of Doe's newly purchased farm. A hard-core cycle enthusiast, Doc finds it hard to believe that the owners would have abandoned such carefully customized bikes. And he's right to be suspicious: the rightful owners soon turn up--butchered and buried in shallow graves at the edge of his property.

As a pathologist, Doe's got more than enough forensic evidence of murder, but precious few clues to the identity of the murderer. Then Lucy Kirkland comes to call. The sister of one of the victims, she tells Doc that only one man could have done the deed--a towering, knife-wielding psychopath named Buddy, whose sadism is legend even among motorcycle gangs. There's only one problem: Buddy's unmistakably mammoth skeleton was among the remains found at the site of the slaughter.

Or was it?
