The villagers of Thrush Green are all determined to make the newcomers welcome, but it's not easy .. .

The new residents inhabit the new retirement homes built on the site of Thrush Green's ugly old rectory, destroyed by fire, and there is heated discussion in the village about who will, and who should, live in the new houses. Meanwhile the old inhabitants have their worries. At the school Miss Watson learns that her brother has been hurt in a car accident; an argument flares up between architect Edward Young and Dr Lovt'l, his brother-in-law; and Dottie Harmer becomes dottier by the day.
