Young Coady Mcllvain spends his days reading about the heroic exploits of the legendary heroes of the West, especially the glorious Buffalo Bill Cody. The harsh reality of frontier life in Kansas becomes brutally clear to Coady, however, when his father is scalped and he is taken prisoner by Comanches. When he is finally able to escape, Coady finds himself with a buffalo sharpshooter who he imagines is the living embodiment of his hero Buffalo Bill. But real life is seldom like a dime novel, and Fate has more hard lessons in store for Coady--if he can stay alive to learn them.
