Adriana was overjoyed to be living at last at magnificent Castlereagh Manor. But her happiness swiftly turned to despair. The castle was isolated and lonely. She was allowed no visitors. Her beloved aunt had become morose and silent. Riding was her only pastime, but Sir Edward Devereux, her handsome, brooding guardian, had forbidden it.
A terrible curse lay on the castle and its family--this she knew. Then one day, against her guardian's orders, she rode out to the Black Heath and there met the cruel and evil Gypsies.
Suddenly she knew the true meaning of horror...
THE RITUAL OF BLACK HEATH
The tall gray stones of Black Heath loomed against the night sky, lit only by the rising moon. No fire was set.
A bloodstained knife in her hand, Thora stood over her victim, who lay in the center of the sacrificial stone. She chanted in the Rom tongue, and screamed up at the sky, hurling her strange words at the moon...at the few stars. Then she went into a trance.
She brought the knife to the flesh of her quivering victim. Wide eyes stared up at her blankly. She drew the knife gently across the slim throat, and saw the blood come.
Now Thora knew pleasure as her victim would soon know pain. Screeching with hideous laughter, she lifted the knife...
