Magic Rises by Ilona Andrews
Atlanta is a city plagued by magical problems. Kate Daniels will fight to solve them--no matter the cost.

Mercenary Kate Daniels and her mate, Curran, the Beast Lord, are struggling to solve a heartbreaking crisis. Unable to control their beasts, many of the Pack's shapeshifting children fail to survive to adulthood. While there is a medicine that can help, the secret to its making is closely guarded by the European packs, and there's little available in Atlanta.

Kate can't bear to watch innocents suffer, but the solution she and Curran have found threatens to be even more painful. The European shapeshifters who once outmaneuvered the Beast Lord have asked him to arbitrate a dispute--and they'll pay him in medicine. With the young people's survival and the Pack's future at stake, Kate and Curran know they must accept the offer--but they have little doubt that they're heading straight into a trap...

What an emotional thump on the head this book was. Holy Twirl a Whirl I need to sit down.
I went from loving Curran to wanting to neuter him, to fearing for his life and back to loving him again. Bad Kitty, shouldn't do that to my feeble heart. He was the most irritating, rude, egocentric, lovable, sweet, rotten, adorable, strong, weak man.
Kate, oh beaten torn and sliced, she did it all. She losses her heart, losses her trust, looses her place and losses a comrade. She is the punching bag that keep inflating itself for more. Well, until she's had enough and there is nothing left to loose. Poor Kate.
The pack was trying to protect their future. They need to accomplish this goal to save the lives of some of the children. Well, it wasn't as simple as it was made out to be. No surprise there. There was one huge surprise one that will change the future forever. The hiding is over, the war may be beginning.
We meet several new characters. One I really look forward to learning more about is Christopher. He is a mystery, with no known history and some serious abilities.
I think he will be a major player in the next book. There are some new nasty ones that are perfectly rotten and so easy to hate. It's always good to have a cache of nasties around for balance.
Really enjoyed it. I need a re-read on audio to get a better feeling of it.
