Thus spoke Miss Goodhue, a young woman of good family, who has fallen upon hard times and is now employed as a governess.

What Miss Goodhue failed to recognize was that Sir Lawrence had a definite gleam in his eye when he looked at her. But she put him out of her mind as a romantic suitor.

A cat may look at a king, but a lowly governess could hardly give inviting stares to a gentleman of title. Or could she?
