Betsy Monger, recently widowed, is slowly returning to normality. However, running an art class to supplement her pension soon becomes rather less cultural than intended, when the uninhibited actions of her 'mature' students outrages Major Alex Barter, local pillar of society and bane of Betsy's life.

The fact that the deacon's wife volunteered to be the nude model, plus the sudden display of uncharacteristically militant behaviour from other class members when the Major threatens to close them down, does little to calm the situation.
