THE MARBLE LEAF. Why did Rhinebeck Castle so terrify Amy Keeler? Did it hold the key to her husband's mysterious past?

THE THING ON THE PATH.

The cloaked, hooded figure was there, looming in the gathering darkness. And Amy Keeler felt stark fear -- for while the forbidding shape had to be real, she knew it couldn't possibly exist.

Then it turned toward her, and she saw the blank, hideous emptiness inside the hood. Whatever the thing was, it had no face!

All through the years, it was to be that faceless form that haunted her. The castle was beautiful, luxurious -- an ideal place to live. But Amy would never have returned to it had it not been for her husband's insistence. Even miles away, the castle and its threatening phantom stayed in her nightmares. Forced to live there, with no hope of outside help, what would happen to her?

Then she began to lean about her husband's mysterious past -- and to wonder about his strange nocturnal errands. And many phantoms seemed to close in around her...

THE FACELESS ONE

My heart hammering, I went back into the castle and approached the door to the tower room. I flung open the door, and my eyes beheld a robed and hooded figure with its back toward me.
The figure slowly turned to face me. The candle dropped from my hand as I saw that there was no substance beneath the hood -- only blackness!
