Music meant everything to Betty Giles. More than ever, now that her mother was dead, it was her entire life. Literally her life -- for in addition to being her only solace in that gloomy, frightening New York town house where she now had to stay, it seemed to be her sole defense against the people who hated her and wanted her to leave.
The only one she could trust was her uncle, Ben Hayward. But Uncle Ben, himself under a cloud as a suspected murderer, could do little to protect her. She had to fight her battles -- against enemies seen and unseen -- alone.
