A MISS WITH TWO SUITORS...
Hired as a companion to a dowager she's never met, Clio Caldicott arrives to find that Lady Linville has died that very evening in a tragic fall. None of the deceased matriarch's relatives has any notion that their mother had engaged Clio in service, and view her arrival with grave suspicion. Only Hal, Lady Linville's handsome, unmarried son, shows Clio kindness; in fact, he treats her with the warmth of a gentleman admiring of a lovely young lady.

...MUST CHOOSE HER TRUE LOVE

Clio may be an innocent, but it's soon obvious to her that all is not right in the Linville household, and that Lady Linville's death may not have been the accident it seems. In agreement with her is dashing Hugh Stamford, the son of the local magistrate who is proving himself as able in courtship as he is in investigative matters. But what of Hal's affections, and yet unspoken proposal, which seems to be awaiting her own favorable look? Suddenly, Clio has two mysteries to solve -- Lady Linville's unexpected death, and the mystery of her own bewildered heart.
