Eagle Feather and Louise is a fictional story that takes place sometime during Michigan's logging days mid-1800's. As loggers arrived and began clear-cutting the forests, the Native Americans were forced to leave the land they called home. Fate brings together the young son of an Indian chief and the local sawmill owner's daughter in a series of mishaps and adventures. Racial bias comes into play as it must have been present in the lives of the two cultures, then as now. And who, or what, is this thing the Indians call, “The Great Spirit” that inhabits the island in the middle of the lake and mysteriously appears throughout the tale? Although the story is fictional, the references to the logging practices back then are historically correct. Although the sawmill has long since disappeared, the lake and island where the story takes place actually exist. In the Village of Lakeview, near the outlet dam, there is a cannon silently on guard as the reminder of an incident that took place there so many years ago.
