Troubleshooter James Stark, known as the Peacemaker, is hired by spirited lady attorney, Prudence McKay, to protect her clients--the widow Sarah Dunsmore and her daughter Donna. The women are being threatened by the renegade illegitimate son of Sarah's late husband, Clarence, who died after leaving everything to Sarah and Donna in a handwritten will executed under questionable circumstances in a roadside tavern. Now Blake Dunsmore, known as the Sooner Kid, wants his father's estate--and he doesn't care if he claims it legally or otherwise.

The will is probated in the whiskey town of Earlsboro before the notorious shotgun judge, Horatio Hatch, who declares he disapproves of a man disiheriting his own son. Hatch gives Stark and Prudence thirty days to track down the three men who witnessed the will, thereby verifying Clarence Dunsmore's intentions. Hatch's ultimatum sends the Peacemaker and his lady lawyer off on a frantic danger-filled race against time to keep the Dunsmore women's inheritance away from the brutal outlaw, the Sooner Kid.
