Rachel is running...running scared. Yesterday she heard that her ex-husband had been found murdered in his home, his strangely mutilated body wrapped in a patchwork quilt. She's certain of only two things: that the killer is their son Drew (recently released from a home for severely disturbed adolescents) and that Drew's next target is his mother.

And so, leaving behind her the life she has only recently begun to piece together from the shambles of her marriage to Drew's father and her desperate attempts to keep Drew from turning into the sociopath she always feared he's become. Rachel takes off to seek the safety of anonymity in a new town. But her life in Austin entraps her (what will she tell her lover Zachary) what sort of excuse can she give to her closest friend Peyton, and what will happen to the new crafts store, Patchwork, she and Peyton are about to open together?), and by the time she gets on the road, Drew has managed to track her down.

But is Drew Rachel's only enemy? Is he trying to kill her or to warn her about another killer, a killer with a lust for Rachel's death far more terrifying and primitive than any Drew might harbor?

In a breakneck race from her murderer along the back roads and dry hills of a malignant Texas landscape, Rachel finally sews together the patchwork of deceit and sickness that will most surely spell her death. But at whose hands?
