What would possess a young woman in 1870 to journey alone from her native Scotland to a small, lonely hamlet in Norway? That is what her travelling companions wonder as Beth Stewart, a beautiful orphan whose books of wild flower illustrations have brought her a rare independence, embarks on her voyage to Tordendal, her mother's birthplace.

It is a place of surpassing loveliness, but it is also a place of danger, for Tordendal does not welcome strangers and someone is willing to go to any lengths to force Beth to flee. There is a man who wants to take her away from this strange, hostile valley but, despite threats against her life, Beth is irresistibly drawn to this land--and to a brooding, mysterious stranger who lives there.
