The circumstances of how Julie Rubempre entered the dazzling, opulent Danilo Faranacci's life--first to become his secretary, later to become his lovely wife--were bizarre, to say the least. Living alone in Paris at the end of a love affair, she received a strange phone call one evening from a woman claiming that Mr. Faranacci was in immediate need of a new secretary and that he was contacting her because of her well-known efficiency at American Express.
However, when she appeared for an interview the next day, Julie was both angered and puzzled to learn that she was not expected; no one from that office had any knowledge of the call that had summoned her. But Mr. Faranacci hired her for the job, anyway--and at a much higher salary that she had dared expect.
It was not long before Julie succumbed to the appeal of her lavishly wealthy, sensually attractive new boss. And is was not long before he asked her to marry him. As if in a dream, Julie found herself blissfully married to Faranacci and entering his splendorous Venetian palazzo. But no sooner had she passed through the magnificent marble entrance hall, than she found the first clue to the consuming horror that would attend her life as Danilo Faranacci's bride. It was an urgent telegram from her former lover and close friend: DO NOT MARRY DANILO FARANACCI. HE WILL PLOT YOUR DEATH JUST AS HE PLOTTED YOUR MARRIAGE. LETTER WILL FOLLOW.
