Putting on a Broadway show is always something of miracle.

“You don't want Paul, do you?”

“Of course not!” answered Kathleen. “I'm in love with Pat Bell.”
“Has Paul asked you to marry him, ever?”

Kathleen could do one thing for Hannah. She could lie. She did lie steadily. She said, and laughed, “Of course not, Hannah,” and turned away in order not to see the stark, overwhelming relief on Hannah's little face.

Putting on a Broadway show is always something of a miracle. So many things can go wrong before opening night. And when Tara Wood gets a starring role in This Frightened Lady, she knows there'll be trouble from the start. For openers, the brilliant director, David Turnbull, clearly has a grudge against Tara although they have just met. Then, some of the other actors begin having problems with their performances or their private lives or both. Next, there's a plan afoot to replace the talented David with another director. If he leaves the show, things might be easier for Tara and some of the others. Why does her heart reach out to David when he causes her so much anguish?

REHEARSAL FOR LOVE is the story of a powerful clash between two women for the men they love, a brilliant picture of New York's glamorous penthouse society. Kathleen Roberts is certain she wants to marry Pat Bell, the self-made contractor, rather than sensitive, gifted Paul McClure. She is also influenced by her friend Hannah's hopeless infatuation with Paul. Kathleen delays her choice. Then sudden tragedy strikes and she is forced to decide which man she really loves.
