She was an expert operating room nurse dedicated to her profession. Then tragedy struck in the form of the death of a loved one at the hands of a famous surgeon. Since she suspected carelessness on the operating table she decided to deliberately ruin the career of the surgeon in question, using her own skill to bring this about by becoming his assistant, ready to betray him at the first slip he should make.

But she fell in love, made some startling new discoveries and settled her desire for revenge in a totally unexpected manner.

Graham Memorial Hospital all white cement and glass atop a landscaped knoll, sparkled in the morning sunlight to dark-haired Mary Dover, drove toward it slowly, smiling with satisfaction. Three years ago, she had left a Boston hospital to become Dr. Fred Trent's secretary/assistant. At first she had hesitated about leaving the school duties of nursing to join Dr. Trent's radiology department at the hospital in Framington, but now she had no regrets. And part of her happiness centered around the rugged blond surgeon, Matt Clifton, with who she had been spending more of her free time.

When Mary entered the hospital, she found it abuzz with the news that Chief of Staff Ferris had announced his retirement. Speculation was rampant as to who would succeed him. Would it be Dr. Trent, whose wife was related to the Graham family? Or Dr. Carvell, sauve chief of internal medicine? Or even Matt Clifton, whose reputation was highly respected?

It seemed odd to Mary that Matt was determined not to accept the post even if offered it -- until she learned that before Matt had come to Graham Memorial, he had been tried and acquitted on an euthanasia charge, and was now afraid that this would come to light and ruin him. Mary could not believe that this would hamper his chances, but she had not banked on the scheming of Dr. Trent's wife, not on the malicious gossip that swept through the hospital like a tornado, destroying everything in its wake.
