From the moment lovely young Irene Demar arrived at the island paradise of Cimaroon on a two-year scholarship, she sensed that all was not as it should be in the ancient mansion which served as Jean-Pierre Haver's art school. First there was the talk she heard in the village about those "crazy artists on the mountain." Then they mysterious departure of one of the top students combined with someone's attempt to sneak into Irene's own room increased her unease. Yet the greatest shock came when Irene discovered that the current owner of the estate Haver rented and the man who was trying to close the school down was Paul Haldane, the handsome law student who had posed for her scholarship-wining painting! Paul urged Irene to leave the island at once, warning of the possible danger she would be in if Haver learned of their friendship. But with their first chance meeting it was already too late, as brushstroke by careful brushstroke the pattern of Irene's future was completed, forming a portrait of doom from which even Paul might not be able to save her...
