Mary Owens and Melissa Kohn must track down and apprehend a new type of serial killer, one that intentionally inflicts AIDS on his victims in the legal thriller, Extreme Malice.
The story begins with the slaying of the AIDS-afflicted Joan Harrison in her home at the hands of her former boyfriend, Victor Brogga, a venal and shady lawyer. Two years later, while Debbie Stone is going with Brogga, she is fired from her job after a company physical finds that she's infected with AIDS. Brogga abandons her, warning her not to blame him for her AIDS. Mary Owens, a pugnacious and assertive litigator takes on Debbie's case against her employer. At the same time, Owens also agrees to represent Khadra Tombari, a young African girl seeking asylum in this country after fleeing her African homeland to avoid the ritual and barbaric practice of female genital mutilation. Formerly represented by Brogga, Tombari is languishing in jail, waiting to be deported by a vindictive Immigration Service. Owens conducts her own investigation into Brogga's background vowing to get him disbarred. She discovers he was related to the head of the Cleveland mob, the Don.
Debbie Stone's father, Paul Stone, a prominent plaintiff's lawyer, became wealthy suing businesses and obtaining company-destroying judgments for the large fees he gets through abuse of the class action process. It has earned him many enemies, including the owner of one company he bankrupted and who has threatened him.
Mary Owens, Paul Stone and Melissa Kohn, a federal prosecutor and close friend of Debbie, team up to convince the county prosecutor to prosecute Brogga for murder by intentionally inflicting AIDS on Debbie and other women. The group enlists the aid of Debbie's brother, police detective Jason Stone, and Melissa's husband, FBI agent Dwight Costello. At the same time, Paul Stone finds himself under indictment at the instigation of his own partners and some of his clients, who claim he defrauded them out of millions of dollars.
The story takes us behind the scenes of law firm practice and into the legal machinations and abuse of class actions law suits, Immigration Service asylum proceedings, workplace discrimination of the disabled, and personal injury scam actions. These matters all become inextricably woven together bringing terror and death to its participants when they underestimate Brogga's familial connections to organized crime and his fanatical capacity for revenge, especially after being indicted for murder--at the instigation of Debbie's friends and relatives. He has gone underground and is stalking them, one by one.
In a terror filled climax, Mary Owens and Melissa Kohn find themselves alone with, and at the mercy of, the diseased and crazed Brogga who has diabolical plans for their deaths--and they have nothing to save them but their own wiles.
