Grief-stricken by her young husband's death, Desert Rain leaves her village, eager to join her beloved in the After World. Knowing the dangers of the wilderness, her people send out a search party. They also know the legend of the mysterious warrior who was said to be able to travel between worlds. When Desert Rain encounters Spirit Who Walks Like a Man, her desire for life is reawakened.

Once Desert Rain had blended her voice with Arm Bow's in nightly ecstasy. But then her young husband was killed, taking her reason for living with him. Shattered by grief, Desert Rain stole away from her village, eager to join her beloved Arm Bow in the After World. A frantic search party set out after her, fearful she would soon achieve her goal - they knew the dangers that awaited her in the wilderness. They knew about the wild animal. They knew about the hated Blue Coat soldiers. And they knew the legends of the mysterious warrior who was said to be able to travel between this world and the next - shadowy Spirit Who Walks Like a Man.

But how could they know that Desert Rain had already encountered the spirit warrior? In his arms her desire for life was reawakened. In his eyes the mysteries of their ancestors were revealed to her. With his deep voice he called her to join him, their bodies harmonizing in a song sung just by them.
