Josh and Benji are rescued after 2 years as slaves but Benji's mind was broken and he has lost the fight to live. Maria works with the Red Crescent and is assisting these ex slaves to overcome their ordeal, and finds Benji and Josh a small farm on the banks of the Nile well away from Cairo, where they can live and farm away from prying eyes. Josh revels in his new found freedom and developes the farm into a going concern with crops, animals and builds a small hut for them to share; but Benji is just a shadow of his former self and can only relate to the animals; especially the oxen they use for ploughing their fields.Josh becomes involved in the closest village and even studies the Muslim religion; he believes it will give him a better sense of who he is and his place in the country he has now adopted. But others are not so enthusiastic and seek to destroy them both. Maria is happy with the way the small farm is going and asks Josh if she can send others in the same situation to join him and Benji; and he agrees. Maria sends 4 other former slaves and organises another small piece of land that they can join to make their farm more productive.Everything is going well until one of the boys is captured by the slavers and Josh tries to get him back but is captured again and forced into slavery once again, but this time, there is no going back. The slavers inject growth hormones into him and his body grows more and more like a beast of burden.
