Description
Gr 8-10-Jennifer Tobias's 15th year is full of trials: she has a bratty 7-year-old sister who receives lots of attention; a new boyfriend who is mainly interested in a sexual relationship; and is trying out for the school play, ``Romeo and Juliet.'' She is called upon to save her sister from drowning, and must comfort her mother, who faces breast cancer surgery. Jennifer eventually realizes that Nick is not worth sacrificing her values for, and finds her true niche as ``Juliet.'' She also discovers her stepfather to be a caring, supportive parent. What begins as a typical ``poor me'' teenage novel develops into a satisfying story because the young woman grows and matures into a character readers will care about. Her characterization and that of her stepfather are well developed, while other figures are sketchy. The sexual scenes are a necessary part of the story, as Jennifer must struggle with her physical desire for Nick, but realizes that she is not ready for true intimacy. The plot is well developed and will appeal to reluctant readers, especially those who seek realistic teenage romances. Above average conflict/romance fare, but not quite up to the high quality of Norma Klein or Caroline Cooney.-Judy R. Johnston, Auburn High School, WA
